Talk with Sanford Main Street and City Economic Development about the kind of location you need. A property being advertised does not automatically mean the proposed use is permitted or the space is ready to occupy.

Check the use, zoning, and location.
Confirm land-use and zoning information for the specific property before signing a lease or planning improvements. The City's GIS collection includes an interactive Sanford zoning map.

Understand the building.
Construction, alteration, change of use, fire/life-safety, utility, signage, accessibility, or other requirements may apply depending on the project. The Building Division and Citizenserve are the official permitting resources.

Check historic-district requirements.
If the property is in a regulated Sanford historic district, exterior work can require a Certificate of Appropriateness before work begins. Confirm the property and proposed work with the City's Historic Preservation program.

Complete permits and business-tax steps.
The City publishes Business Tax Receipt guidance and uses Citizenserve for applications and permitting. Other state, county, professional, or regulatory requirements may also apply to a particular business.
